Clinical Center
Pharmacy
Boston, Massachusetts
The
layout of the 2,250 s.f. retail pharmacy reflects the shared vision of
the pharmacy owner and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center that it function
as an outpatient pharmacy within a medical office building/clinic. The
public space within the pharmacy contains the drop-off/ pick-up counter
with a prominent lowered area that is wheelchair accessible. There is
also a pleasant waiting area with comfortable seating, approximately 25
linear feet of bookcase shelving for display of items, and a private area
that can be used for consultation or for various items that need fitting.
The remaining two-thirds of the space is devoted to the processing of
prescriptions.
The
design goal of the Pharmacy was to fit seamlessly into the Atrium Lobby
of the existing building. The materials and finishes of the pharmacy waiting
space are in keeping with those of the connecting public spaces. A mural
stenciled on beech veneer, behind built-in banquette seating, depicts
chemical formulas of common medicinal drugs. The work space behind the
counter maximizes the comfort and efficiency of a staff that fills several
hundred prescriptions each day.
