Founders Hall,
Cranwell Resort & Golf Course
Lenox, Massachusetts
The
88-acre Cranwell Resort contains two of Lenox's historic "Berkshire
Cottages," the Beecher (1893) and the Wyndhurst (1911), as well as
a broad collection of campus structures built between 1933 and 1974. As
part of a comprehensive planning effort to expand the resort's lodging
capacity and guest amenities, a number of these structures were evaluated
for renovation and integration into the resort's overall character and
land use plan.
As
the first phase to be implemented, the 1963 Founders Hall (built originally
as a dormitory) has been converted into 32 luxury guest rooms. The original
"ranch style" structure featured distinctive Perth Amboy brick
and slate roofing. By introducing porches, balconies, garden fences, french
doors, an arrival porte-cochere and a distinctive roof lantern, the renovated
structure's awkward proportions have been concealed and the "new"
Founders has become a favorite of guests and owners alike.
