Stanford Calderwood
Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, The Huntington Theatre Company
Boston, Massachusetts
The
Calderwood Pavilion, Boston's first new theatre venue in over 75 years,
opened with great fan fare in October 2004. With its 372-seat Wimberly
Theatre and 200-seat Roberts Studio Theatre, it will be shared by the
Huntington Theatre Company (HTC) and the Boston Center for the Arts, in
Boston's historic South End.
The
Calderwood Pavilion is the anchor tenant in this nine-story mixed-use
building on Tremont Street; the larger facility includes restaurant, retail
and residential spaces.
It
is the HTC's second performance venue and this additional space will allow
them to expand both creatively and physically.
The
36,000 s.f. complex has a three-story interior space and includes the
Wimberly and Roberts Theatres, generous rehearsal rooms, box office, public
lobbies and back of house functions. The new facility is connected to
the historic Cyclorama building, home of the Boston Center for the Arts
(BCA), and will be jointly operated by the HTC and the BCA.
Machado
and Silvetti Associates and ADD Inc. designed the building's exterior,
and the mixed-use project's condominium component.
