Metropolis Theater, Navigator of the Seas
Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines

The Art Deco movement is the stylistic point of departure for the Metropolis Theater designed for Navigator of the Seas, the fourth in the Voyager Class for RCCL Navigator was launched in the fall of 2002.

As our design theme for the Metropolis, the Art Deco influence established the design direction at all points of entry into the theater, beginning with our design of the carpet with a repeating graphic of the radiating sunburst, a classic Deco motif. Highly stylized portraits of people who seem to have stepped out of a 1920’s movie set are hung in the theaters lobbies. Adjacent to the sweeping Grand Stair is a backdrop of painted sky scrapers in the Cubist style setting off a bronzed sculpture of three figures — a man in the center dressed for the theater in a stylish coat with the collar up and on either side an equally stylish woman — out for an evening on the town.
