Westwood Village
Los Angeles, California
This
1,200,000 s.f. mixed-use development is located in the heart of West Los
Angeles' Westwood Village commercial district. It features a 332-room
four-star hotel, 150,000 s.f. of prime retail space, 4 restaurants, a
652-seat cinema, office space, 24 luxury condominiums, a sub-grade 1,600-car
garage and a full service grocery store on the first and second levels
of the garage structure.
The
project was designed in a "Mediterranean" style to satisfy local
zoning ordinances. The layout emphasizes human scale, street life, authentic
use of materials, and the discovery of new views and outdoor rooms. The
private spaces are balanced by the dedication of over 25% of the site
area to open landscaped gardens and courtyards. The integration of the
sub-surface garage is based on clarity of circulation (fourteen elevators
and ten escalators to serve the garage), efficient construction, and freedom
of expression for the architecture above.
Scott
Wilson, AIA was Director-in-Charge/Project Architect while with Benjamin
Thompson & Associates, Cambridge, MA.
