A Scott Butler,
AIA
Director
A. Scott Butler
B. In my first year at the University of Manitoba in wonderful Winnipeg,
friendly Manitoba, they performed a role call for all the new students.
They called our names and, anticipating various abbreviations, pronunciations
and nicknames, asked us what name we wished to go by. It turned out that
three of us had the middle name Scott, which coincidentally was the name
we went by. Furthermore we had last names that placed us one behind the
other in the roll call. It went something like this....
Professor: Robert Barron!
Robert: I go by the name Scott.
Professor: Arthur Butler!
Arthur: I actually go by the name Scott.
Professor: Gordon Bailey!
Gordon: My name is also Scott.
As disconcerting as it was for the professor the remainder of the class
caught on quickly and when names were called out like...
Professor: Oh Keat Chow!
Oh Keat: Call me Scott.
Ultimately I became known in college as 'Art', which presented great possibility.
If I chose not to fraternize with certain groups, friends would comment...
'Art should be socially responsible', or if I happened to be racing for
class and went sprawling down the icy steps of Tache Hall, others would
say... 'Art is everywhere!' I even participated less involuntarily when
for the student art show I framed my year's worth of parking tickets and
entitled it 'Violations of Art'.
The initial A. took on great significance after that. From that point
on in my life I never felt compelled to be known as 'The Scott Butler'
but remained satisfied that A. Scott Butler was distinctive enough.
So here I am today featured on this web page, my name prominently on the
letterhead, doing great things in design to amuse middle America and the
@#$& Microsoft program won't let me enter the initial A. without turning
my next paragraph into B.
